How much is an Auxiliary Deputy worth?

The St. Clair County Sheriff Department has encouraged residents of the County to join our department as volunteers for over 25 years. How much are they worth? In simple dollars and cents their service is estimated to be $19.51 an hour! In 2007 our Auxiliaries donated 6140 hours. That equals $119791.00! Of coarse, the value of our volunteers cannot be measured in dollars alone.

IS Announces New Estimate for Value of Volunteer Time

(Washington, D.C., April 10, 2008) -- Independent Sector announces that the 2007 estimate for the value of a volunteer hour has reached $19.51, which increased from $18.77 per hour in 2006.

"Our nation’s volunteers play a vital role in helping America’s 1.4 million charitable organizations improve lives across the country and around the world,” said Diana Aviv, president and CEO of Independent Sector. "Quantifying the value of their time gives us yet another indicator of how important volunteers are to communities.”

The new value of volunteer time estimate comes out just before National Volunteer Week, which takes place April 27-May 3. National Volunteer Week celebrates America’s proud legacy of volunteer service and the importance that Americans place on strengthening this country by helping others. The value of volunteer time and National Volunteer Week provide the opportunity to acknowledge the millions of individuals who dedicate their time, talents, and energy to making a difference.
IS calculates the hourly value of volunteer time based on the average hourly wage for all non-management, nonagriculture workers as determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with a 12 percent increase to estimate for fringe benefits.

“Click It or Ticket” 2008: Enforce Belt Laws, Save Lives, Make a Difference

 

Gunfire. Gangs. Stolen vehicles. Armed robbery. A law enforcement officer sees it all — and then some.  So where does seat belt enforcement fit in?

 

Consider this …

· The scope of the problem — 42,642 people were killed on our Nation’s highways in 2006; for young people ages 2 through 34, motor vehicle crashes are currently the leading cause of death, far out-pacing crime and disease related causes.

· More pervasive than homicide — For example: In 2004 alone, 1,603 children, ages 8–15, were killed in motor vehicle crashes; whereas in the same year and age group, 426 children were victims of homicide.

· An effective solution — Worn correctly, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent for front-seat passenger car occupants and by 60 percent for pickup truck, SUV, and mini-van occupants.

· Thousands can be saved — An estimated 15,383 lives were saved by seat belt use in 2006; during the five-year period from 2002 through 2006, seat belts are estimated to have saved the lives of 75,000 people.

· History shows enforcement works — High-visibility enforcement of seat belt laws, such as the annual “Click It or Ticket” mobilization, has been highly effective at raising the seat belt usage rate: the national usage rate increased from 58 percent in 1994 to 82 percent in 2007.

· Too many still haven’t gotten the message — Nearly one-fifth (18%) of all motor vehicle occupants still do not buckle up: nighttime drivers, young males, and teens are among those least likely to wear seat belts, which greatly increases the risk of death for members of these groups.

Telephone Solicitation Scam

Sheriff Mearl J. Justus is alerting the citizens of St. Clair County to beware of a telephone solicitation scam. Our citizens are being contacted by telephone and asked to make a contribution to the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association. The phone solicitor explains to those being contacted that they are soliciting rural residents on behalf of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association. They are requesting donations in the amount of $20.00, $30.00 or $40.00. It is believed the calls are originating from the State of Florida.

Citizens are advised to ignore any call they receive, from any organization

claiming to represent the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association. Sheriff Justus reminds the citizens of St. Clair County that the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association NEVER solicits by telephone.
