In an effort to spread the word about the nonprofit work done by BackStoppers, St. Clair County Sheriff Mearl Justus has organized an informational meeting open to the public on Tuesday in Belleville.
"I feel that a lot of people hear about BackStoppers once in a while," said Justus, who sits on the organization's advisory board, "but there aren't a lot of people out there who know all the good that they do. We want to get the word out."
BackStoppers was formed in 1959 in St. Louis to help widows and children of fallen police officers and firefighters.
"They take care of families of police and fire officers who are killed in the line of duty," Justus said.
The nonprofit organization now encompasses 10 counties in both Missouri and Illinois, including Madison and St. Clair counties.
Justus explained the assistance varies from money to cover funeral expenses to taking over payments for home mortgages to covering college tuition for children.
"I've known them to still do things for widows whose husband was killed 25 years ago," Justus said.
In addition, BackStoppers also began assisting families of law enforcement personnel and firefighters who have received catastrophic injuries. "They do that on a case-by-case basis," Justus said.
The informational meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bel-Air Bowl at 200 South Belt West in Belleville.
BackStoppers Executive Director Ronald Battelle, a retired chief of St. Louis County Police Department, is expected to attend, along with other board members.
