The St. Clair County Correctional Academy began in 1984, with the objective to professionally train members of the correctional staffs of county jail facilities. The five-week centralized training session is also designed to provide the intense training in the basic needs and skills for the new officers, which may be required in order for each of them to function effectively in the atmosphere of a jail setting.
The Academy uses training materials and resource documents approved by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Class instruction includes topics ranging from courtroom testimony to the proper handling of contraband found within the facility. A forty-hour mandatory firearms course is included within the 200-hour academy for correctional officers in addition to instruction in crisis intervention, criminal law, communication skills, and defensive tactics. Instruction is presented by professionals that maintain expertise in each specific field.
In July, 1985, training for Correctional Officers was mandated by the State of Illinois. It is the belief of the Academy, that this most important step has not only improved the security of our jail facilities, but it has also brought better professionalism to the corrections field and the officers serving in that capacity.
ADVANTAGES:
- A five-week intensive training program will enable participants early return to their agency.
- Modest course cost.
- Four course offerings per operational year to help meet mandated requirements.
- The training is conducted within a facility where the practicums may be applied directly.
- Limited enrollment for greater personal attention.
Sgt. Herbert updates the training Blog on a regular basis. We have stories, photos and videos that document the each new Academy Class, from start to finish.
