The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department Investigation Section is committed to serving the citizens and businesses in the County of St. Clair. The Investigation Section conducts follow-up investigations regarding major crimes, such as homicide, sex offenses, robbery, burglary, aggravated battery, auto theft, fraud, theft, arson, and all crimes not specifically assigned to the other sections. The Sheriff's Department is an active member of the St. Louis Area Metropolitan Major Case Squad.
Cases are screened and used as part of the investigative case-management procedure. The purpose is to achieve the highest rate of clearance possible by prioritizing criminal investigations in terms of the crime's seriousness and it's potential solvability, and allocating investigative personnel according to the needs as prioritized.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department reported an increase (12%) in major crimes which occurred in unincorporated St. Clair County. The following is a break down of the Uniform Crime Reporting Index 1 crimes as reported to Illinois State Police and the FBI:
